TEHRAN (INIC)- Iranian researchers modified properties of welding joints by using nanocomposite materials in the structure of the welding.


Weakness of the welded object in the joint is one of the negative points in welding method. Numerous methods have been developed by using various materials to improve the quality and create desirable properties in the joints similar to the properties of the base metal. Nanotechnology has obtained new success in this regard.


Filling metal is one of the important parameters that affect mechanical properties of welding joints through tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding method. The filling metal has been produced by using nanocomposite microstructure in this research and it has been used in the welding method. The production of nanocomposite metal filler is much cheaper in this method than other production methods. In addition, nanoparticles are dispersed in a homogenous manner in the bed in this method.


In this research, magnesium objects have been connected through tungsten inert gas welding method. A nanocomposite has been used as the filling metal. Accumulative roll-bonding (ARB) process was used to create nanocomposite structure and disperse zirconium oxide nanoparticles in a bed of magnesium-based alloy. The presence of tough oxide nanoparticles in the bed of alloy increases the toughness of the joint and modifies its mechanical properties.
